This qualification reflects the role of individuals in a range of community settings and peoples’ homes, who provide support in a manner that empowers people with disabilities to achieve greater levels of independence, self-reliance, community participation and wellbeing. Workers promote a person-centred approach, work according to and may contribute to an individualised plan, and work without direct supervision. They may be required to supervise and/or coordinate a small team.
Course Pre-requisite
As per the Training Package, learners must have Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) to commence the course. See Entry Requirements.
Course Requirements
Learners must complete 10 units of competency including seven (7) core units and three (3) elective units to attain this qualification CHC43121 Certificate IV in Disability Support. Elective units have been selected in accordance with the packaging rules and are relevant to the work outcome, local industry requirements and qualification level.

Target groups for the CHC43121 Certificate IV in Disability Support are students who are:
- Seeking to pursue a career in disability work
- Seeking to enter a new industry sector
- Seeking a pathway to higher-level qualifications.
Characteristics of the target group are as follows:
· Students who are seeking to develop their skills and knowledge in disability work to further their career prospects or study pathways.

Course duration
This course will be delivered over 22 weeks of study, including 2 weeks of holidays/study break.
Entry requirements
As per the Training Package learners must have completed following qualification to undertake CHC43121 Certificate IV in Disability Support
Completion of: CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) OR
Completion of: CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) OR
Completion of: CHC30408 Certificate III in Disability PLUS the CHCSS00125 Entry to Certificate IV in Disability Support Skill Set.
Furthermore, Penny Royal College has the following entry requirements:
Students must:
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Participate in a course entry interview to determine suitability for the course and student needs.
- Have sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills, for example, to read materials relevant to the course, participate in discussions and observations and apply numerical concepts such as in relation to calculations and time management.
Additional requirement:
Students must:
- Be able to obtain a Police Check Clearance and NDIS Worker Screening Check to join the work force.
- Have access to an operating computer, laptop or tablet with Microsoft office.
Assessments
A range of assessment methods will be used to assess required skills and knowledge for each unit of competency. These may include but not limited to may be case studies, written or verbal questioning, role plays, observations and practical demonstration. Students will be notified in advance of the time and form of an assessment. As this is a competency based training, outcome of the student assessment will be deemed Competent (C ) or Not Yet Competent (NYC).
Pathways
Potential employment options are as a direct support worker in aged care, disability, home and community care or other direct care work in the community services industry.
Students who complete this course may wish to continue their education into the CHC43015 Certificate IV in Ageing Support or and a range of other related community services qualifications such as CHC52021 Diploma of Community Services.
Course credit
Students may apply for recognition of existing qualifications or skills, knowledge and experience (credit transfer or recognition of prior learning). The granting of course credit may affect course fees, as well as the duration of the course.
